How to make:

STIR bourbon with three ice cubes (dry to the touch frozen ice, not wet ice) in a glass. ADD rye whiskey, sugar syrup, bitters and two more ice cubes. STIR some more and add another two ice cubes. STIR a bit more, and if you have room, add more ice.

Garnish:

Orange zest twist

Comment:

The melting and stirring in of ice cubes is essential to the dilution, chilling and so the taste of this sublime classic.

Variant:

Old Fashioned (US muddled fruit version)

Origin:

As with the Martini, the glass this cocktail is served in has taken the name of the drink. Its origin stems from the adaptation and renaming of a similar drink known as the Whisky Cocktail which was shaken and served up. Who did the adapting and renaming is unknown.
