A lot will depend on the Rye you choose. I suggest a "Barely Legal" Rye (51% rye) like a Sazerac or Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse is sweeter. In this particular cocktail, that is what I'd use next time due to the dryness of this cocktail. A higher rye mashbill would be too dry, imo.
Intense and complex layering of flavours. Outstanding interplay: the vermouth and amaro bring out the rye spice and herbal bite. On the dry side of course, but the amaro adds enough sweetness that it’s balanced. As JH says, not a light cocktail.
I keep Ramazzotti in my liquor cabinet for this cocktail, the Ragtime cocktail, Tom Macy’s Rhapsody in Rye and for its intended purpose - a tasty digestivo.
Remarkable. I used Averno Amaro, which is sweeter than Ramazzotti and balanced it with 2 dashes of Fee Brothers Old Fashioned bitters instead of Orange bitters. Excellent nuances. We tried it on the rocks also: It is great again.
Outstanding. Perfect for an aperitivo. Burst of flavours and decidedly dry and boozy. Not for any one looking for a mild, sweet aperitivo. Going on my favourites.
