Whoa, this one is GOOD. Made with High West Double Rye, Elijah Craig, Johnnie Walker Black, Sandeman Madeira, and Lazzaroni Amaretto. What a fantastic drink. Everything works well together, with sweet almond and Madeira up front and a nice slightly smoky rye finish.

Thanks, can you batch this in an airtight bottle indefinitely since there are no juices? Would it taste the same in 6 months?

All wines and fortified wines oxidize quite rapidly after exposure to air. Probably best to vacuum and store in fridge or leave out the wine and add that later.

Might not taste exactly the same. May actually taste better. It is certainly a good cocktail to batch.

Do you think this cocktail would benefit from top shelf ingredients? I am think Johnnie Blue label, High west Midwinter Nights Dram Rye, Old Elk Bourbon, Disaronno , and Broadbent Madeira Verdelho 10YR. Would it be noticeable that this all comes together to create something special or would it be a waste to do this in your opinion?

I'm always in favour of using the best ingredients you can afford.

How important is it that the rye is 100 proof? Would it not be better or ok to use a high quality rye such as high west rendez vous?

FOr me, just isn't rye whiskey at less than 100 proof. However, you should make to please your own tastes.

Wow. What an outstanding cocktail. A burst of all different flavours with the slight hint of sweetness and almond. There is a subtle hint of smoky which went perfectly with the cocktail, and I am not a big fan of smoky.
Thanks Simon for another perfect aperitif.

Understand that madeira is less commonly stocked than vermouth, but the madeira is absolutely necessary for this drink / vermouth makes it a totally different (but still delicious) drink

Made as described, although my almonds weren't toasted (naughty Richard). Very smooth. The Madeira really brings it all together.

I've not used almonds as a garnish but I know when cooking, toasting almonds or pinenuts transforms them and massively increases the flavour

Made this with Cossart Gordon's five year old Bual Medium Rich. The Madeira flavor dominated the Amaretto yet I couldn't set it down. Immediately made another this time reduced the sweeter Madeira a third. Ahhh sublime! Definitely five plus stars.
