Tried it two times over the years. One with a cask strength level Bourbon (Wild Turkey Rare Breed Non Chill-filtered version at 58.4% ABV) and then with Maker's Mark. This recipe works so much better with the former than the latter, as the intensity cuts through the sweetness of the sugar and the Amaretto. I think unless you have a really strong Bourbon, cut down the sugar to 2.5ml maybe, although I still think the former is way better.
substituted simple for brown sugar syrup with the idea that it would let the amaretto sing a bit more. did it work? not sure, also the first time I used lazzaroni instead of disaronno. regardless, a very tasty treat.
Wanted a dryer cocktail. Used a California Bourbon Bottled in Bond and Amaretto. Left out the sugar syrup. Great cocktail. Served with almond biscotti. Great evening cocktail.
Made this with Elijah Craig Small Batch. Smells heavenly and tastes quite nice. I’m definitely interested now in trying the toasted and smoked version also.
I like bourbon. I like almonds (and marcipan). After finishing this cocktail, yes got used to it, but it does not bring the best out in the ingredients. In other words, no second round here. Sorry.
Just mix 2 measures of turbinado sugar to 1 of water in a saucepan, heat and stir until the sugar has fully dissolved, let cool completely, bottle and refrigerate. You can also use regular brown sugar, although turbinado is not that hard to find. I would highly recommend making your own syrup in general, it's much cheaper than buying it, and you can customize it as you see fit, or make different batches for different use cases.
