Made this with Elijah Craig Small Batch. Smells heavenly and tastes quite nice. I’m definitely interested now in trying the toasted and smoked version also.

I like bourbon. I like almonds (and marcipan). After finishing this cocktail, yes got used to it, but it does not bring the best out in the ingredients. In other words, no second round here. Sorry.

I can’t find the sugar syrup for sale. Can I just mix brown sugar and water instead?

Just mix 2 measures of turbinado sugar to 1 of water in a saucepan, heat and stir until the sugar has fully dissolved, let cool completely, bottle and refrigerate. You can also use regular brown sugar, although turbinado is not that hard to find. I would highly recommend making your own syrup in general, it's much cheaper than buying it, and you can customize it as you see fit, or make different batches for different use cases.

Surely this not an old fashioned but an “improved” whiskey cocktail.

Used a bourbon maple syrup in place of the sugar syrup. Expressed orange peel. Absolutely fantastic!

Just tried this for a second time with Fee Brothers Toasted Almond bitters and it's even better

Very nice subtle flavours. Easy to drink and not too sweet. Is very spirt forward, which I like.
