Not an obvious combo, but works amazingly well. Definitely on my radar now.
IMO one of the most overhyped cocktails ever. I absolutely love each of the individual ingredients, but I feel in the Negroni they take away from each other rather than adding to one another. When I do occasionally make a Negroni, I usually cut the Campari by half, after which the balance works for me.
This is actually fairly close to my personal preferred specs for the Negroni, as I find the Campari far too overpowering in the original. This has a much better balance if you ask me.
Rye whiskey 50% abv, Red quinquina e.g. Dubonnet, Byrrh, Mandarin liqueur, Pimento dram, Amer Picon
Very nice Manhattan variation, like a Red Hook with tequila. However, I find it too sweet with the sugar syrup and more balanced without. Could be my vermouth (Martini rubino), but I don't think that's really overly sweet.
I actually prefer the earlier version of the recipe with 52 ml gin, but I do dial down the maraschino a tiny bit. I also have Briottet violette, which seems forgive a more liberal amount. Call me old-fashioned, but I like my Aviation purple(ish).
Love the typo...if it was one. :-)
While the Espresso Martini is personally one of my favorite cocktails, I agree with some of the comments suggesting something a little more classic, such as the Sidecar or Gimlet. Personally, I'm offended at any list that doesn't contain an Aviation, but all that said, I think this is right on.
