Ingredients:
1 12 oz Straight rye whiskey (100 proof /50% alc./vol.)
34 oz Amaro (e.g. Averna)
14 oz Rhum Clément Créole Shrubb liqueur
2 dash Peychaud's or other Creole-style bitters
× 1 1 serving

How to make:

  1. Select and pre-chill an Old-fashioned glass.
  2. Prepare garnish of orange zest twist.
  3. STIR all ingredients with ice.
  4. STRAIN into ice-filled glass (preferably over a large cube or chunk of block ice).
  5. EXPRESS orange zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

History:

Adapted from a recipe created by Chris Hannah at Arnaud's French 75 Bar in New Orleans, USA and named during the 2010 Mardi Gras when be served the cocktail to singer and song writer Mac Rebennack (a.k.a. Dr. John) at a Krewe de Vieux event.

I concur with Howard’s note — choice of rye is crucial here. Peerless single barrel rye made this a bit too sweet.

Leaning into the Caribbean theme by adding 10ml allspice dram balanced the drink nicely.

It shows great promise. I think the rye is crucial. Wild Turkey 101 is a bit rough. Will try with Pikesville 110 and report back.
