History:

Adapted from a recipe in the 1933 book Hollywood Cocktails published by the wonderfully named, Buzza-Cardozo, a Hollywood-based company that specialised in illustrated cards and books.

JEAN HARLOW COCKTAIL
½ Bacardi Rum
½ Italian Vermouth
The peel of 1 Lime or piece of Lemon
Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.

Hollywood Cocktails, 1933

This eponymous cocktail was created in the heyday of Jean Harlow and is said to have been one of her favourites. The platinum blonde American 1930s film actress and sex symbol sadly died in 1937 at the age of just 26 during the filming of MGM's Saratoga. The film was completed using a body double and released weeks after her death.

Too rough for my liking when mixed using Otto's Athens and Barceló Blanco. Felt like a diluted rum overshadowed with garnish and bitters. Maybe I chose the ingredients wrong.

A very nice, dry cocktail. I did decrease the Rouge Vermouth to 1 oz/30 ml. Very enjoyable.

The vermouth completely dominated my bottle of Appleton Signature. Upped the rum on the second go but it's still a bit too one note for me.

Nice balance of fruit sweetness with dry finish. I like it a lot!
