Method

Select and pre-chill a COUPE GLASS.
Prepare garnish of coin-sized grapefruit zest twist (sun-like).
SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.

Review

Best made with a bottled-in-bond rye whiskey but also works well with bourbon. Depending on your whiskey and grapefruits, you may want to omit or even increase the sugar syrup. Strike the right balance and this is a refreshing bracer of an aperitif.

I made this with Dolin dry, and I was pretty disappointed. It starts nicely enough, with a sort of slightly herbal whiskey note, but I found the finish to be almost unpleasant. It resolved in a bitterness that distracted from, rather than added to, the overall experience. I will stick to a Brown Derby next time I'm in the mood for a whiskey and grapefruit combo.

Wasn't what I was expecting. Interestingly enough, this cocktail tastes like a light bodied crisp white wine, very refreshing. The vermouth takes the lead here, and I suppose in Texas fashion, whips the whiskey into shape
