Few companions have shaped human history quite like the dog. From loyal working partners and trusted guards to beloved family pets, dogs have earned their reputation as humanity's best friend.
International Dog Day, celebrated annually on 26 August, is an opportunity to celebrate every dog, regardless of breed, age or background, while also recognising the countless rescue dogs still waiting for a loving home. It's a day to appreciate the joy, loyalty, and comfort these four-legged friends bring to our lives, from being a companion on a long walk to greeting us with boundless enthusiasm.

The day a new colour transformed science
In 1856, a teenage chemistry prodigy, William Perkin, accidentally invented a new colour, using rudimentary laboratory equipment at home while on holiday from college.
Perkin's used potassium dichromate to oxidise aniline, a colourless aromatic oil derived from coal tar, producing a black precipitate that he discovered dyed silk purple, a colour he named Mauveine (aniline purple). He had made the world's first synthetic aniline dye, patented on this day in1856.
Before Perkin's discovery, all dyes were natural - made from roots, leaves, flowers or, in the case of purple, sea snails. Now, for the first time, fabrics could be dyed in predictable, lasting shades. Perkin's changed the dyeing industry and made him a fortune. The 18-year-old also inspired other young Victorians to take up chemistry and develop medicines, photography and much, much more.
