You can drive a car, carry a gun, go to war, get married and have children but you can’t purchase alcohol under the age of 21 in the USA – something which is “celebrated” annually on this day.

The National Minimum Drinking Age Act was passed by the United States Congress on 17th July 1984. The act doesn't outlaw the consumption of alcoholic beverages by those under 21 years of age, just its purchase. However, seven states: Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Vermont, and the District of Columbia extended the law into an outright ban.

We're thankful of the more liberal treatment of alcohol in the UK and Europe and suggest that Prohibition doesn't work - as America is well aware. If you're over 21, or reside somewhere other than the USA, we suggest you celebrate with a 20th Century Cocktail, which is a better drink than the more appropriately named Oceans 21.

It's Ernest Hemingway's birthday

Ernest Hemingway is as noted for the quality of his writing as he is for his drinking prowess. Born this day in 1899, it seems appropriate to celebrate the birth of this heroic cocktail drinker with one of his favourite tipples - Death in the Gulf Stream, and as one drink surly wouldn't be enough, perhaps follow with a Hemingway Daiquiri.
