We tried all versions - historical & Difford's. First, it is among our favourite cocktails in which fresh orange juice is substantial. Second, we definitely prefer the "previous" interpretation by Difford. I like to balance the sweetness of orange curacao liqueur with 2 dashes of Orange bitters.
I added this to my favorites when it was your old recipe. Tonight I made it again, not realizing the recipe had changed, and wondered why I liked it so much before! I appreciate the historical accuracy, but I think I greatly prefer the flavor of your previous take. The fuller orangeyness of it is delectable.
We didn't have orange bitters, but keeping in mind my sopping wet palate, I made this with the original proportions. Fairly vermouth forward, which resulted in it being rather bitter. Maybe using mandarin liqueur in place of Orange Curaçao could've made it not as good as it should have.
I've not tried with mandarin liqueur (frustratingly just squeezed and used the juice from my last orange) but I have just revisited this recipe and moved to be closer to the original spec, without the bitters. I'm keen for feedback.
Great cocktail. Being our oranges are tree ripened, the juice is perfect for this cocktail.. Did a little extra on the bitters as we were afraid it would be too sweet. Worked great.
Knew what you mean about meh OJ drinks. Try the original proportions with pink grapefruit juice and a dash of orange bitters. (This now called 'Dan the Weatherman' due to MrsW mishearing...)
