Decided to make it my first time taking into consideration previous comments. So: 1:1:1 of Navy strength gin (Chemist, from here in Asheville NC USA), Punt e Mes, Cynar. First sip: smooth, with subtle (compared to Negroni) bitterness...and then delayed-reaction POW!! from the Cynar. Nice, and fascinating the way the Cynar hits in timed-release fashion.
In a kind of ‘perfect’ version, split the gin between standard and navy strength, Cynar and Averna (best mates), and Rosso Antico with punt e mes. Kind of demonstrating, no matter how much you mess around with it, negroni is a pretty spectacular formula.
Did something similar you Sebastian C: I find the gin tends to get lost in a Negroni so split it with a navy gin (four pillars) and split yet vermouth between carpano and punt e mes. Nuclear flavour explosion!
Loving the Negroni experimentation atm. Broke the code.
If you find the regular Negroni too strong on the bitter side, definitely try this. Really delicious and easy drinking. And there’s so many good cocktails with Cynar. It’s great stuff!
Great drink (with Cynar it’s hard to do wrong). If you have Gin-sceptic friends who “ride or die” whiskey, something we attempted was akin to doing a flavor overload by using Sipsmith Lemon Drizzle and Antica Formula vermouth. Logically, it makes no sense to have 3 flavour-heavy spirits engaging in a Battle Royale, but we channeled our inner Ghostbusters, “reversed the stream,” and were pleasantly surprised by the result.
A nice variation on a negroni for when I'm in the mood for a more tempered bitterness. Most recently made with Gin Mare, whose more herbal/vegetal notes nicely complemented the Cynar.
