Two parts amaro to 1 part Islay single malt is a boundary-pushing recipe but with a splash of banana liqueur, the resulting cocktail is balanced and tasty
Look, it has a lovely balance, don't get me wrong. But an Italian amaro, a Scottish whisky and a Carribbean liqueur? Really, who wants that? Maybe it's a Swiss thing, the sort of drink one enjoys after making the perfect watch. Who knows? But is there an algorithm that I'm not aware of that 'calculates' this sort of recipe? Sadly, our good host does not permit negative ratings... -1 for us.
How is this good? I mean really, how is this good? The title is certainly fitting because by all metrics I feel like this shouldn't work yet somehow it does. The whiskey is so dominant that you need that increase of Montenegro to counterbalance it and this drink does it beautifully. The banana liqueur provides some sweetness and a finish of banana candy. It's lovely, no doubt about it.
This one was quite a trip for me. First sip: what in the world is this. Second sip: well at least its interesting. Third sip: this is actually pretty good. Smoky and sweet, just a hint of banana.
Truly a love/hate cocktail. The flavour is very strong and unique. I enjoyed it and will probably make it again. The missus however.. Almost needed a bucket XD
It works. It definitely works. It's also, however, incredibly strange. I absolutely love montenegro and creme de banane. I even quite like Islay scotch in a cocktail. I cannot get over the combination of burning rubber and banana though. Maybe it's a little sweet, even. Very worth trying either way.
Really enjoyed this cocktail. We are not a fan of smoky flavours in cocktails, but this all works. It is not overly sweet, but the amaro and banana blends well to produce a wonder blend of flavours.
Tried one with Montenegro and one with Averna, and much preferred the Averna version.
It seems like there already is some "green banana" in the Montenegro, and thus the resulting drink is overly banana candy flavored.
Averna's spice pairs exceptionally well with a smokey Laphroaig, in my humble opinion :)
A fantastic use of Montenegro, which unfortunately doesn't have a ton of cocktails recipes out there. I used Laphroaig 10, and it was savory, smoky, herbal with just a touch of sweetness. Don't skip the salt, either, it really makes the flavors pop.
