More deep golden amber than black in appearance, this Daquiri takes its name from the black rum (well, dark brown rum) it's made with. Pungent rum notes...
I like my rum. I used myers dark rum fot this whixh worked well. Made it again but added 25ml of Rockstar Grapefruit Grenade Spiced Rum. It combined beautifully to make a well rounded tasting grapefruit cocktail, especially if you like your stronger cocktails.
Closest rum available for me was some Pussers Gunpowder. Worked fine on a first pass, but taking a cue from a regal daiquiri by adding a good hunk of grapefruit zest to the shake kind of lifted this for me. A big spritz of lime and grapefruit essential oils at the end gives a big of additional grip which sits well with the way the overproof rum opened up.
Tried it with Goslings : great alternative to the classic daiquiri if you have a spare grapefruit. Nice balance between fruit and rum, less boozy than the standard version, loved it.
Being big rum drinkers, we really wanted to like this, but it fell a bit flat for us. The citrus was a bit overpowering to our tastes. It was dry which was good. After the first sip, added a 151 float, which improved it slightly. I like my rum drinks with a strong rum flavour, and this did not do that for me.
Hmmm, interesting. Not sure if I like it just yet. May need to tweak the citrus a bit to balance the very strong rum flavor (used Kraken). Alternatively, I may try a different rum and see how that goes. It's definitely worth experimenting with, if only to have a good option for something with rum as the primary spirit.
I am NOT a dark rum drinker. But the sound of this recipe was enough for me to get a bottle of Plantation dark rum and I loved it! Nice to have something other than a Hemingway Daiquiri to put a bit of fresh grapefruit juice in. (Note: my 2:1 sugar syrup is made with Billington's light muscovado sugar - or rather, pure liquid gold). Like Betty, it is on the list! (And I am off to make another one)
Not the prettiest color.....but great taste! Love being able to use grapefruit and it nicely balances the lime. Citrus forward and easy to drink....though potent. Going into the rotation.
