A riff on the classic Last Word cocktail substituting Irish whiskey for gin. Named after Frank Fogarty, a vaudeville performer known as The Dublin Minstrel...
As the man himself has pointed out there aren't too many Welsh themed cocktails. So swap the whisky for Penderyn and switch to yellow chartreuse and you'll have yourself a 'St David's harpist ' just in time for St David's day - phew! Both versions pretty tasty
The Last Word is one of my favorite cocktails, but I find this to be superior. I stick to the specs and feel it benefits from a good long shake. I have tried it with more expensive Irish whiskeys but find regular Jameson works quite well. Excellent work Mr. Difford.
Agreed, this was one of my earlier Last Word experiments, and it really works. Jameson black barrel is the Irish whiskey that I most often have in house, and it works great here.
I think you're going to have to use a pretty flavorful whisky if you want to notice it. Probably prefer a Last Word over this but it's definitely not bad.
It's pretty good as is, but for me it's a bit too overpowered with Chartreuse and Maraschino.
I like this better:
1.5 oz Irish whiskey
0.5 oz Green Chartreuse
0.5 oz Maraschino Liquor
0.5 oz Lime juice.
Sounds worth trying! I’m out of Chartreuse and the price is crazy these days! After the “great Chartreuse crisis of ‘21” the price gouging buggers have never dropped the price back down again. 😡
A few months ago, I would have considered this cocktail excellent. After these few months on Difford's guide, my expectations are much higher. Impressive work.
For those fearful of the quantity of chartreuse in this recipe, your bravery will be rewarded when trying this recipe!! Chartreuse is an acquired and intense taste. Personally, I am apprehensive of any recipe that calls for more than 15 mL of the stuff. However, I tried this recipe on a whim because it stood out from the vast array of Manhattan or old fashioned riffs when searching for rye nightcaps. This is going in my “best of” cocktail notebook.
This is a really good cocktail. I've been making mine with Jameson Black Barrel, and have somehow got confused and been using lemon juice instead of lime. I'll sort that out, but I can report that lemon works well. I also tend to prefer my cocktails sweetish, and its seemed just perfect with an added maraschino cherry.
Starting St Patrick’s day early (practicing) I added chilled water as it is what I learned here that it’s the right thing to add when using spirits such as Chartreuse, Maraschino liqueur or Bénédictine, and it really works.
Made this for Saint Patrick's Day with Jameson as the whiskey and was very pleased not only with the fresh, springlike flavours but the lovely pale green colour of the drink.
Initially, I held back a bit on the Maraschino, as I find this can sometimes overpower a drink, but, after tasting the cocktail before shaking, I added the rest in as it really does need that much to help temper the lime juice and add floral character. Overall, I found this a lovely, really well-balanced drink.
Necessity being the mother of invention, not having Irish whiskey, I used a single Highland malt. I call it Facal Eile, which is Scots Gaelic for Another Word
