We really enjoyed this cocktail on a rainy, cool May afternoon. I did reduce the St. Germain to 3/4 oz. and it was the perfect balance for us. The absinthe comes on strong, but it quickly shares the stage with the bourbon, elderflower and cognac for a delicious, smooth, complex finish. This will go into our rotation for sure.
Invested in a bottle of elderflower since it features in so many interesting cocktails. This one is great. Upped the absinthe to 5ml and still very palatable
I’ve made this with Hennessy as suggested, and later, with Pierre Ferrand Cognac. It is noticeably better with the Ferrand Cognac in it. Adds a subtle citrus note that brightens the overall flavor of this lovely, complex, and simple little drink. Delicious. Highly recommended
This is a delightful drink with many levels. I was out of absinthe, so substituted a dash of wormwood bitters and 2 dashes of Peychauds bitters. Gave the drink a slightly reddish hue.
Another very interesting, complex, and delicious drink, Simon. I used 3 mists of Absinthe into the mixing tin and it turned out very well. My wife declares it another "keeper."
I tried this with Islay whisky, Caol Ila to be precise, instead of bourbon, supposing that the smokiness would go well with elderflower and absinthe. My goodness, the result is way beyond what I expected... A smokey and sweet cocktail, with a tad of the grapinesss of Cognac and the anise of absinthe. This is unlike anything I tasted before.
