On this very day, in a Lincolnshire hamlet in 1643, Hannah Ayscough gave birth to a son so small he could fit in a 1 litre jug. Little would anyone have guessed that the tiny baby, called Isaac Newton, would go on to make one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time.

Isaac Newton discovered gravity after watching an apple falling from a tree. So, we were thinking that it would be appropriate to mix a drink inspired by the very fruit that inspired Newton. Shake up a Apple Blossom cocktail and toast the guy who first understood what really kept our feet on the ground.

It's also the world's tallest skyscraper's birthday

Competition is tough for the coveted title of the world's tallest skyscraper, but in 2009 the good folk of UAE won it comprehensively, with the Burj Khalifa, which stands more than half a mile tall over the sandpit that is Dubai.

Inaugurated this day in 2010, The Burj Khalifa (Arabic for 'Khalifa Tower') boasts 163 storeys, spread over 829.8 metres, and holds no fewer than seven world records. It has 57 elevators and 8 escalators. The elevators are, apparently, so fast that you can see the sunset twice - once from the base of the building, and once from its highest floor.

It has, also, been engineered to cope with the savage sandstorms that blow into Dubai from time to time, taking out scaffolding and hoardings. The Sandstorm cocktail, a long, fruity number, has all of the sandstorms' colour, but a little less destructive power.
