Review:

An agave spirit-based riff on Harry MacElhone's 1922 Cameron's Kick. (I tried adding a couple of drops of saline solution to this cocktail, but they killed its pleasing steely edge.)

History:

Adapted from a recipe created in 2010 by Anthony Schmidt 2010 at Noble Experiment in San Diego, California. However, for our recipe, I've leaned heavily on Satan's Whiskers' spec. I've also included a freshening quarter barspoon of crème de menthe, added to Schmidt's recipe by Justin Lane Briggs at Faro in Bushwick, Brooklyn, in 2015 (although he used two whole bar spoons).

This is a winner! Appearance is opaque white (from the shaking). Slight nose of tequila and mezcal as you start to sip. Terrific blend of tequila and mezcal - citrus and lightly smoke/earthiness is great. Lemon adds to the brighness. This is not a sweet cocktail (I think the lemon helps offset and dilute the relatively small amounts of syrup(s) used). And it isn't a hot/boozy drink either - very nice, and similar to a margarita. I don't get any clear expression of the creme de menthe, but I think that is intentional, as a minty taste would really detract from the tequila/mezcal harmony (maybe helping out with the brightness). Outstanding cocktail!
