It's easy to see how this two-equal parts Espresso Martini-like cocktail has become so popular.
The layered version of this cocktail, a "Puesto Carajillo", is thought to have been created by Spanish troops in Cuba when the country was a Spanish province. They mixed coffee with rum to give them courage; 'Coraje' means courage in Spanish, and its diminutive is 'corajillo'.
The Carajillo remains popular in Spain, where its form varies by region, from simply pouring brandy into an espresso to heating brandy with lemon juice/zest, sugar and cinnamon, then adding coffee. (In Catalan, the Carajillo is called Cigaló.)
This shaken or "Shakeado" version of the Carajillo emerged in Mexico and, since circa 2015, has exploded in popularity.
