Adapted from a recipe created in 2008 by Phil Ward at Death & Co. in Manhattan, New York City, the Saramago pays homage to the celebrated Portuguese author José Saramago. Phil also eponymously named his Baltasar & Blimunda cocktail, created around the same time, after the 1982 historical novel by the author.
