Named after the capital city of Trinidad, the home of Angostura Bitters, and fittingly this cocktail calls for a monster half an ounce of bitters. Despite...
I'm actually amazed. I've never seen a cocktail using this much of Angostura, so although I expected the cocktail to be completely dominated by it, I was still intrigued and tried it today. Surprisigly the amount of Angostura isn't overdominant at all! The flavours work so well together that I can feel every single ingredient I used. The ratios are also perfect here, there's nothing I would change about this recipe.
Coming back to this as an update, but IMHO a very smoky mezcal works best here. For the first time I used Montelobos and the second time I used Lopez Real. They are both great, but the Montelobos has a very smoky flavor that balances very nicely with the angostura bitters, while the Lopez Real felt a little one dimensional.
Incredible drink, very bold flavours that work perfectly together, pleasant bitter finish of the ango, smokiness of mezcal which for some reason my mind associates with pure fire, and just the right amount of sweetness from orgeat. Every next sip makes me fall in love with this masterpiece more and more. Will certainly mix it again in the future.
Absolutely unbelievable! Didn't register how much Angostura until I was mixing the drink. Thought it might be a typo. Then worried my wife might pour this over my head when I served it to her. Instead it went straight into our favorites list. What a delicious surprise.
Mi Mama mezcal | Finest Call orgeat | Super lemon juice | Angro ________tastes like: a barbecue, a jamaican barbecue. very intense, dont even want to slosh it around cuz it might melt my teeth lol. really makes me sweat. astringent.
I was just thinking this reminds me of a German rauchbier I had once that made me feel like I was drinking barbecued meat, except this is more delicious and nuanced with the orgeat and lime. What a unique cocktail, and a great option for anyone into smokey & spicy drinks.
This was delicious! I'm not sure *how* it works, but it really does work -- the big bold flavors of the mezcal and Angostura are subdued yet amplified by each other to ultimately create something new and distinctly tasty. I would definitely make this again!
What an absolute blast of a cocktail. Three easily dominating flavors are balanced so perfectly it's borderline unbelievable. The evolution is delightful.
Wow. This turned out to be a delicious and very interesting cocktail. I didn't have Mezcal Joven so I used Los Amantes Reposado with great results.
To me, it smells like marzipan with cherry, the almond syrups smoothes the mezcal but you could still get some smokiness. To finally end up with a slight BBQ sauce aftertaste. Very weird, but in a good way.

A very full on and fast evolution from ango to mezcal. It's like sipping a light Trinidad sour then as you breath out you get all the smokiness. The bitter and smoke are unlike anything I've tried before, this drink is mind blowing to this novice.
This drink doesn’t make sense. The full-on flavour of mezcal mixed with an overdose of Angostura = a smooth, warm, complex and rich experience, it’s only when you put down the glass that you realise you can’t quite feel your lips!
Woof. Woof! WOOF! Just as the description says, very easy to drink. I've seen these Ango full drinks and had to try this one. Wasn't disappointed and tastes far better than it smells if you find Mezcal a bit ponging..
