Since the weights shown are cumulative, the difference between the final weight of 608g and the previous of 475g should equal 140g, but as it stands the difference is only 133g, so 7ml short on the water. I'm pretty sure the difference won't be perceptible on tasting (this is only 1ml out per serving), and certainly not by the second round!

Josh, thanks so much for that. Didn't realise the weights given were cumulative. Still don't understand how 140ml water can be anything other than 140g! But you're quite right that no one would be able to tell the difference in taste. I just like accuracy 🙃

Sorry to be pedantic Simon, but if you fine strain it, surely all the gold leaf just ends up in the sieve instead of in the drink...

Are you allowing for variance in specific gravities of each ingredient?

Cocktailpixie

Hi Simon, I do realise that needs to be factored in, but, unless there's some glitch, the recipe I'm seeing says:

438 ml London dry gin [391g]
87.5 ml Dry vermouth [475g]
140 ml Chilled water [608g]
So it's the vermouth and water weights that seem wrong. The water, for instance, surely weighs exactly 140g...?

Please do explain if I'm missing something here as I'm genuinely puzzled. x

It's beautiful. Used Montelobos mezcal. I agree that it beats a Last Word, but I couldn't resist dropping in a maraschino cherry as I would have felt like I was missing out otherwise!

To take this up a notch, I made bacon fat-washed bourbon (I used Maker's Mark) which works beautifully with the maple syrup. Served with a crisp cooked slice of the smoked streaky bacon laid over the top of the old-fashioned glass as a garnish.
