History:

The Tango Cocktail appears in Harry MacElhone's 1923 book Harry of Ciro's ABC of Mixing Cocktails with the recipe repeated verbatim in his 1927 Barflies Cocktail, where he also adds that the recipe is by Harry, a bartender at Palermo, Rue Fontaine, Paris. In the 1920s, the Palermo was a popular Parisian cabaret and music venue in the 9th arrondissement.

By the time this recipe appears in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book, rather than just rosso (Italian) vermouth, dry vermouth is also used.

1/6 Curaçao
1/6 Orange juice
1/3 Italian vermouth
1/3 Plymouth Gin
Shake well and strain into chilled glass, and squeeze orange peel on top.
(Recipe by Harry, Bartender Palermo, Rue Fontaine, Paris.)

I generally agree with Simon's one-line reviews but on this occassion I could hardly disagree more. So much so that I wondered if I'd gotten the ingredients wrong. I double-checked and I haven't but I don't get much of the gin (which is a plus for me, because I'm not a particular fan) and I don't get much of the orange. I certainly wouldn't call it zesty. It IS well balanced and I had no trouble finishing it but it's innocuous and immemorable.
