Normally I first try the original recipe, but today I had to start with an no-ABV version. I used 2 strawberries, 6cl o,o% Tanqueray, Mionetto 0,0%, elderflower syrup and added two drops saline solution and a grind of good black pepper. The result was really tasty, obviously not like the original.

It's wild to me that the drinkers rate it more highly than The Guide. I rarely see that.

(Also: it's a delicious drink.)

We had a go at making a rum version of this. In place of the gin, we used 45ml of white overproof pot still rum and added just 2.5ml Rum Agricole (as an echo of gin's botanical notes). Also, we substituted lime for the lemon juice. And we muddled two strawberries instead of just the one. We love the original and, to our taste, this is just a slightly deeper and more serious variant.

Really luscious, nicely balanced and delicate complexity. As another commenter indicated, an extra strawberry in the muddle doesn't go astray. An excellent summer party cocktail.

One of our favourite things about cocktails is that deciphering their names can be a bit like solving a cryptic crossword. We guess that the name here is a subtle and gently humorous reference to the Carthusian monks who produce the incomparable Chartreuse. And we are sure that the good men of the book love their strawberries.

This is, as the rating I have given it proves, exceptional. Especially if you add an extra strawberry.
