Revisited this as a Luxardo love-in: their appetitivo plus abano amaro. The abano really noticeable, added a good splash of Soda water to balance, which it loves anyway. Might try against Aperol another time.

Averna definitely sits more harmoniously here, abano is amazing but the herbal-roots tend to predominate rather than integrate with the aperitivo liqueur. Loved how Averna cola flavours complemented the Luxardo aperitivo.

Hey, it’s a good alternative when you drank all your Campari (and happen to have all the other things).

The Aperol lightens it up compared to the standard Negroni, but the carpano + Averna retain the body and fullness of flavour. A nice freshness of the orange twist highlighting the citrus in the amaro. An excellent Negroni riff.

I also tried subbing 10ml of the Averna for Cynar and was very happy with the result. Slightly more mellow and rounded.

I know some use carpano as their standard vermouth in a Negroni or Manhattan, but the balance really works here.

Used Oregon Spirit gin and replaced the Aperol with Contratto Bitter red liqueur ("Campari Lite"). Still kinda sweet but more bitter flavors than Aperol would provide. Per D. Kavrakov I gave it a dash of Bitter Truth Aromatic Bitters, which complemented the Averna nicely. The Averna makes it heavier and richer and more complex than a conventional Campari-based Negroni so I garnished with lemon zest instead of orange for contrast. Very good Negroni variant.

Exquisite, one of my favourites. A dash of Old fashioned bitters completes this exclusive palette.

I don't have Antica, so I figured I'd try Punt E Mes as a vaguely strong vermouth..it's good, but I wonder if punt e mes simply isn't in the same class as antica here. It's just quite a muted negroni.

Yes definitely worth trying with carpano for the full body, fruit and sweetness.

A super alternative to a straight negroni, dialing down the bitterness and introducing more flavour.

delish. sweet, but not too sweet with bitterness at the end.

Very flavourful. Nice hint of the bitter and some sweetness. All the ingredients work well together. It is smooth and easy to drink.

Substituted Tempus Fugit Gran Classico for the Averna with good results.

This really is very good indeed. I think I even prefer it to the Negroni.

Interesting! It's like a negroni, but instead of a full-on campari bitter punch, it's mellowed with the use of aperol and averna. A more down to earth complex woody flavour.
