Serve in an Old-fashioned glass

Ingredients:
1 12 oz Hayman's London Dry Gin
34 oz Bittersweet orange-red aperitivo
34 oz Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth
12 oz Amaro (e.g. Averna)
× 1 1 serving

How to make:

  1. Select and pre-chill an Old-fashioned glass.
  2. Prepare garnish of orange zest twist.
  3. STIR all ingredients with ice.
  4. STRAIN into ice-filled glass.
  5. EXPRESS orange zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

This riff on a Negroni was originally served straight-up in a coupe and comes from The Girl And The Goat restaurant in Chicago, USA where it was created in 2014.

Hey, it’s a good alternative when you drank all your Campari (and happen to have all the other things).

The Aperol lightens it up compared to the standard Negroni, but the carpano + Averna retain the body and fullness of flavour. A nice freshness of the orange twist highlighting the citrus in the amaro. An excellent Negroni riff.

I also tried subbing 10ml of the Averna for Cynar and was very happy with the result. Slightly more mellow and rounded.

I know some use carpano as their standard vermouth in a Negroni or Manhattan, but the balance really works here.

Used Oregon Spirit gin and replaced the Aperol with Contratto Bitter red liqueur ("Campari Lite"). Still kinda sweet but more bitter flavors than Aperol would provide. Per D. Kavrakov I gave it a dash of Bitter Truth Aromatic Bitters, which complemented the Averna nicely. The Averna makes it heavier and richer and more complex than a conventional Campari-based Negroni so I garnished with lemon zest instead of orange for contrast. Very good Negroni variant.

I don't have Antica, so I figured I'd try Punt E Mes as a vaguely strong vermouth..it's good, but I wonder if punt e mes simply isn't in the same class as antica here. It's just quite a muted negroni.

Yes definitely worth trying with carpano for the full body, fruit and sweetness.

Very flavourful. Nice hint of the bitter and some sweetness. All the ingredients work well together. It is smooth and easy to drink.
