Review:

Whether a big meal or a big night, this cleansing bittersweet herbal digestive is a great way to finish it, and by Saturday, according to the nursery rhyme, Solomon Grundy was properly finished.

Adapted from a recipe created in 2011 by Dan Long while bartending in Los Angeles. The Solomon Grundy is eponymously named after the supervillain in DC Comics, who, in turn, is named after a 19th-century nursery rhyme.

Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday,
That was the end,
Of Solomon Grundy.

Made it exactly to recipe---Hayman's, Antica, Fernet---except used Nonino Amaro since I don't have Lucano. Not surprisingly, just 5 ml of Fernet obliterates the contributions of all other ingredients in the drink, including the pricey Nonino. There might be a complex cocktail hiding in there, but I can't taste it above all that minty Fernet Branca. I'm going to put Fernet in a dripper bottle and use it like bitters from now on, a few drops or at most a dash at a time. Glad I only have a split.

Hi. Any proposal what amaro could sub for the Lucano? Might Averna be an option? Cheers Andreas

Nonino is much nearer than Averna, but I'd recommend investing in a bottle of Lucano. It's one of the foundation amari.
