History

Adapted from a recipe created in 2007 by Phil Ward at Death & Co. in New York City, USA.

Review

Bittersweet, herbal, and cleansingly refreshing, a delightful digestive. (Beware: a citrus zest twist knocks this cocktail off kilter.)

Tasty. Agree with the other comments about 1/4 oz of Lucano adding a surprising amount of bitterness. It was too much for my wife. I added a 1/2 oz of 1:1 simple syrup to hers and it helped a lot.

Defo a surprising combo. Herbal/plant notes are a triumph. Sipping it right now and feeling transported to the glorious bars of Italy. Looking forward to experimenting with other gins/amaros (amari???)

Surprised by how much I could taste the gin (Ford's) in the balance but it was wonderfully melded. Definitely will go back and try other gins.

The mint and spearmint notes of the Lucano are very evident, balanced by the fruit, sweetness and bitter Cherry of the ingredients. Tangy and rich, while also refreshing. Perfectly balanced bitter sweet and herbal.

The mint notes were one of the first things I noticed on my first sip, but I am also impressed at how much bitterness just 1/4 oz of the Lucano imparts. Good balance overall. I use Cheritelli maraschino, which has a bit more maraschino flavor than Luxardo liqueur and plays well with a Luxardo cherry garnish. By way of contrast, Phil Ward (in the Death & Co. cocktail book) says "no garnish," but the Luxardo cherry works here, esp. with Cheritelli.

I’ll have to put this on my retry list, thanks Chris! I guess the bitterness of the amaro also amplifies the bitter elements in the carpano, even tho by itself the latter tastes so sweet (to my palate).

Interesting that there’s also a Lucky Luke with rather similar ingredients. Just a coincidence I wonder?

To look at the recipe you might think this is a bit like a gin Brooklyn. You'd be right. Excellent.
