History

Adapted from a recipe in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book.

SNYDER COCKTAIL.
1/3 French Vermouth.
2/3 Dry Gin.
3 Dashes Curaçao.
Shake well and strain into cocktail glass. Twist orange peel on top.

Harry Craddock, 1930

Review

A 2:1 Dry Martini but with a splash of orange curaçao mellowing the dryness and adding more subtle complexity than orange bitters.

Stirred so that it was crystal clear. I did add a dash of orange bitters once poured. Initially soft orange gives way to slight bitter.

How comes it's shaken and not stirred?

Like most cocktails in his book, Harry Craddock called for this cocktail to be shaken. However, modern bartending convention calls for this cocktail to be stirred.

Slightly off topic, but I have frequently seen the claim that Fleming wrote Bond as preferring his martinis shaken because this indicated a certain lack of breeding. Your point about Craddock's book suggest to me that this might just be a myth?

Great cocktail! We did it like the original Savoy recipe with 45 ml gin and 22,5 ml dry vermouth. Still a very good drink we will do again.

I love this. Use a juniper forward London Dry and the curacao provides nice balance in my opinion.
