The “Midnight Cocktail” in the 1925 L’Art du Shaker (and doubtless pre-dating it) has the same ingredients (sans saline), only in a 2:1 ratio… so perhaps not so contemporary!

Great observation, Ian. I'll add the Midnight Cocktail to Difford's Guide and link the two.

If you make this with Strega it becomes a Macbeth. Recommended.

Given the name I thought it would be fitting to use a Canadian blended. I'm still not sure why but it was surprisingly good. The chartreuse was honestly the main driver flavorwise bit don't skip the saline solution. It reduces the sweetness and separates it from a regular old fashioned. I'm still not sure if I would make it again but I really like the idea of it. I'll probably try adding some saline to my OF next time just to see how it works.

This was great for an evening sipper. The herbal nature of the Chartreuse and the flavours of the Scotch whisky this cocktail shines. Using a medium grade of blended Scotch whisky is perfect for this cocktail. There is a slight sweet taste with a slightly peppery and herbal flavour. Would highly recommend.
