I liked SC in 1989 when I was 19 - the cool film with Powers Booth and the less objectionable Caradine - but trying it now I learn it was horrible.
And it ruins any cocktail it touches.
Southern Comfort is so balanced and inoffensive the problem is not that it "ruins" cocktails, but that it adds very little, much like vodka in most vodka-based cocktails.
Vodka-heavy cocktails are also sort of embarrassing / shameless, in that they add little and just increase ABV, in most cases where they don't impact solubility of certain unique flavours. But vodka doesn't get this vitriol. And Southern Comfort at least adds more of a flavor base than vodka.
I'm in an awkward position here because I am trying Southern Comfort for the first time, and am extremely unimpressed, but, because of perspectives like these, expected horrible fusel notes covered up with massive amounts of sugar. But this is simply not the case.
You accuse me of "classism" (whatever that is) and then accuse me of not being discerning. For the crime of finding Southern Comfort disgusting, a drink you admit you don't even like yourself.
The hypocrisy implies that you are an unaware buffoon, throwing out nonsense like "classism" (did you mean "elitism"?) to cover up your ignorance.
Southern Comfort is vile. I feel it wasn't so bad 40 years ago, but then I knew no better being just 17.
Please grow up and stick to what you think of the drinks rather than trying to punch above your weight in moral philosophy.
