History

Adapted from a recipe in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book.

QUEEN'S COCKTAIL.
½ Slice of Crushed Pineapple.
¼ French Vermouth.
¼ Italian Vermouth.
½ Gin.
Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.

Harry Craddock, 1930

Review

Gin-based with vermouth's bittersweet wine notes and pineapple tropical fruitiness. This fruity Martini takes its name from a three-equal parts Perfect Martini being called the Queen. This version not only has pineapple but traditionally 1 part dry vermouth and 1 part rosso vermouth to 2 parts gin. I prefer with a tad less dry vermouth.

Yummy, a martini fit for a Queen !! I used Dolin vermouths because that's what I had, along with Dole Lite Pineapple Juice to cut the carbs. The Hayman's Gin is key: I unfortunately ran out of Haymans after the first round, and was unhappy with both Plymouth or T10 as a substitute (but I did find the T10 + 1 tsp simple syrup and a dash of salt made it close to the original using Haymans). A keeper!!

Very pleasant. Like the hint on pineapple. Adds a touch of sweetness, but not too much. All the ingredients work well together in this cocktail.

I am confused by the arithmetic! Shouldn't that be 3/4 oz. Dry French?

Traditionally it should but I prefer with a bit less dry vermouth. I've added a note above to make this clearer. Thanks for bringing to my attention.
