History

The "So So Cocktail" appears in Harry MacElhone's's 1923 Harry of Ciro's ABC Of Mixing Cocktails where he credits this drink to "Mr P. Soso, the popular manager of Kit-Kat Club, London."

So So Cocktail.
1/6 Grenadine,
1/6 Calvados,
1/3 Cinzano Vermouth,
1/3 Gin.
(Invented by Mr, P. Soso, the popular manager of Ciro's Club, London.

Harry MacElhone, 1923

MacElhone's recipe is repeated verbatim in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book but with MacElhone's stipulation for "Cinzano Vermouth" becoming non-brand specific "Italian vermouth".

SO-SO COCKTAIL.
1/6 Grenadine.
1/6 Calvados.
1/3 Italian Vermouth.
1/3 Gin.
Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.

Harry Craddock, 1930

Review

This beautifully balanced, delicately herbal cocktail is so much more than just so-so.

I made this with St. George apple brandy. For my taste, I needed a little extra grenadine to balance out the taste of the brandy -- others might not need this. But even before I added the extra syrup, I was pleasantly surprised at how much the apple notes in the brandy came out.

A very nice cocktail for the fall. Applely without being too sweet.
