This one was unfortunately a bit too sweet for me. It wasn't necessarily too sweet in the amount of sugar, but rather the cherry liqueur, the Grand Marnier, and the cognac all contributed to a cloying sweetness that's difficult to deal with. I would try maybe 4:2.5:2:1:1.5:0.25 next time just to see how a higher ratio of cognac and vermouth, and slightly less GM, would play with the rest of the ingredients.
Saying that, adding just a dash of saline solution, and some more dry vermouth, helped the cocktail a ton. It doesn't feel as cloying anymore but rather like a standard digestif.
Definitely on the sweet side. Spirituous, rich and fruity with a slightly bittersweet finish. Added a dash of orange bitters as others, but still rather sweet for me; maybe cut the grand Marnier to 15ml?
Pre orange bitters: pretty nice but too sweet
Post orange bitters: pretty wonderful!
Can someone give me an idea how the 1/2tsp of Lux’o contributes at all in the face of all that powerful Cherry Heering?
Sipping this right now, well one sip left. Took the advice to add a dash of orange bitters too. Let my husband make this one whilst getting ready and we both loved it, 5* for us
The nose on this cocktail is fantastic with cherry being most prevalent. It is on the sweet side upfront but quickly changes mid-palate to a slightly bitter dark fruit flavor and then has a slight bitter-sweet finish.
I followed the recipe exactly with exception of substituting the Remy Martin for a Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva. Unbelievably good, the brandy starts at the beginning then the other ingredients fill in the middle then the raisined brandy finishes off at the end. Fabulous but expensive. Not to be used very often. Anyone suggest any other decent brandies to try with this cocktail?
I found it too sweet. Generally, it could be a nice drink. Maybe I’ll add some supasawa next time to keep the appearance and still give it more balance.
Great for an aperitif. Thought it may be a bit too sweet for our taste, so we added a dash of orange bitters. The sweetness will be impacted by the dryness of the vermouth.
After a recent gift of a bottle of Portuguese Espinheira Ginja cherry liqueur, I looked for drinks to make. While I don’t know how this cocktail would taste with the original Heering, because I have none, this is a wonderful drink! Layered and interesting. In future, I may get a bottle of Heering, or the De Kuyper or Cherry Marnier you highly recommend, or maybe the new local Northern California favorite, Patique, and see the impact. Regardless, we like the Landing Gear!
