It is similar to a regular 2:1 gin Martini in some crazy way. The added lime juice from the lime zest twist is a must, though, to really get that saline feeling. The bianco vermouth is also quite crucial so don't use a bad one. Perlino Bianco didn't quite work for this unfortunately, but I can imagine a more flavorful bianco vermouth would work very well.
Oh nice! My variant used Jose Cuervo Especial Silver Tequila (not quite as tasty neat as Rooster Rojo so I thought ideal for this), Martini blanco and Australian Bitters Company Aromatic Bitters (the only bitters I have). The combination works very nicely - silver tequila dominates (not a bad thing!) with the vermouth and bitters adding spicy complexity. No lemon twist (although I could and maybe should have to reduce waste...) this really demonstrates how tequilla can substitute/rival/surpass gin in cocktails! And I love gin (juniper!!!)
Editorial note: we think the "How to make" should read "...into ice-chilled glass.", not "...ice-filled". This is one of two recipes that has persuaded us that the Martini can indeed be a great cocktail.
Been playing with this one for a few months now. RT below hits the nail on the head; the tequila will dictate the outcome. Use Siete Leguas, Lalo or an equivalent. Try a Reposado. I have found the Italian Martini & Rossi to be the best match (over Dolin, my fav gin vermouth) but dial it down to 3:1. Bitters optional, but absolutely worth playing with. Orange, lemon or grapefruit are all good choices. This is absolutely the best summertime, pool-side Martini I've ever had (I've had a few).
The impression this makes will vary enormously depending on the tequila used. With tequila Ocho it was sublime, with Sauza "Hornitos" it was good but not exciting. I recommend Dolin Blanc, as I don't think tequila stands up to the funkier Italian biancos. It's the same story with gin martinis.
Loved this - I made it with Boker's Bitters in the absence of Margarita Bitters, which worked just finr. A word of warning - strain it into an ice-filled standard coupe as advised and it wont fit! I just slurped and topped it up - all good.
Hi Lee. I'm not aware of my making a recent addition, certainly not in the last few months, so one you may have missed. Hopefully, you have the ingredients to hand and find it worthy of the rating.
This was an outstanding aperitif. While I usually like reposado, this needed the clean, light agave flavour of blanco The cocktail is enhanced with the margarita bitters. Perfect. Going into my favourites.
When I first started mixing at home, I tried a tequila martini recipe from the 70s, that used regular extra dry vermouth. It was just OK. This is exceptional. The Bianco vermouth combines with tequila in a much more complex way. Sadly I didn't have any margarita bitters, and had to make do with orange.
