AKA: Bump Start

History:

Inspired by his earlier Waterfront, the Hard Start was created in 2009 by Damon Boelte when beverage director at Prime Meats in Brooklyn, New York City. This two-ingredients shot originated during a challenging brunch service when the restaurant's general manager, Bill Mann, who was working a hangover, asked Damon for a pick-me-up. After drinking the shot, Bill said it should be named after the method of starting a bike with a dead battery by rolling down a hill, putting it in gear and popping the clutch. (What we Brits call a 'bump start'.) Hence, Damon named his new shot the Hard Start.

Alcohol content:

  • 0.7 standard drinks
  • 31.36% alc./vol. (31.36° proof)
  • 9.4 grams of pure alcohol
