Apple notes from calvados combine harmoniously with vinous vermouth with creole-style bitters, this Sweet Manhattan-like cocktail's anchoring ingredient.
Said to have been created in the 1870s by a bartender at the legendary Manhattan Club, which once stood at the north corner of 34th Street and 5th Avenue, New York City.
Our recipe is adapted from George J. Kappeler's 1895 Modern American Drinks – How to Mix and Serve All Kinds of Cups and Drinks.

Fill a mixing-glass half-full fine ice, add two dashes gum-syrup, three dashes Peychaud or Angostura bitters, one-half jigger apple brandy, half jigger Italian vermouth. Mix, strain into cocktail-glass, twist small piece lemon-peel on top.
