Review:

This whisky-laced, lightly spiced apple and lemon cocktail has an autumnal hue and, when served in an old-fashioned glass over cubed or block ice, is perfect for hunkering down on a winter's eve. However, it is in its incarnation served over crushed ice, as preferred by Jeffrey Morgenthaler, its creator, that this has become the unofficial cocktail of USA Thanksgiving and the holiday period that follows.

History:

Adapted from a recipe created circa 2012 by Jeffrey Morgenthaler, Portland, Oregon, USA. Jeff was inspired by the bourbon and apple combination in a simple Stone Fence.

On his own website, Jeff says, "We serve this one on pebble ice with a garnish of fanned apple slices, but crushed ice works just as well, and plain old ice cubes are great, too."

Ok, but which Amaro? Averna is listed, but as a newbie, I don't have it yet, and can't rationalize Yet Another Bottle without risking an insurrection.
Nonino? Nardini? Ramazzotti? They all seem pretty close together with their orange flavor, I think.
Meletti? This one gets too close to Fernet for my palate.
Heck, Amer Picon is supposed to fit under the Amaro tent, along with Cynar.

Click on the link for Amaro in the recipe and you are graced with a dizzying list of … equivalents? I guess it's time to start wading through that list to get an idea of the differences.

The closest analogue is Ramazzotti. It's almost the same. Nonino is completely unsuitable. It has a more floral and drier flavor. It's also more bitter and has a grappa-like taste.

Try 1 1/2 ounces scotch; 1/2 ounce allspice dram. A bit sweeter perhaps but more fall spices to balance that out.

Agreed; I did Morgenthaler's original recipe and it was too Scotch forward for me. Adding in more Allspice Dram noticeably improved it.

I went a little heavy on the Pimento dram (because I love the stuff) and found this to be a great cold weather drink. Very autumnal and full of the familiar spices we all love. A quality cloudy apple juice really shines here and is a good way to use some up if you've got extra.
