History

Adapted from a recipe David A. Embury's 1948 The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.

GLOOM CHASER or GLOOM RAISER
Dry Martini with 2 dashes absinthe and 2 dashes grenadine to each drink. Stir. Compare the International. Another version of the Gloom Chaser consists of a Daiquiri with curaçao substituted for the sugar.

David A. Embury, 1948

Sadly, Embury does not give a recipe for "the International" in his book.

Review

Grenadine adds a pink-red hue but absinthe ensures this Martini remains dry. Nonetheless, this drink may chase your gloom (blues) away.

Less vermouth and more absinthe than the Savoy Special No. 1. I love both, but I like this drier version more.

This was very good. Key here is the quality of the gin and the grenadine. We make our own grenadine which is not as sweet as commercial products. Love the herbal boost from the absinthe (I love absinthe). I will definity have this again.

Tried this. Don't think there is enough character here to make it other than a substandard Martini
