History

Created on a beautifully warm blue-skied summer's evening in June 2022 by yours truly at the Clocktower in Rye, England. As I said, this is a transportive cocktail. Open fires are optional.

I've since discovered there is a cocktail named "The Kummel Ye Faithful" (made with equal parts gin, kummel, and cream) in the 1929 book Judge Jr. Here's How Again!.

The Kummel Ye Faithful
And how they will gather around if they know this is what they're going to get!
1/3 Gordon water
1/3 Kummel
1/3 Cream (thin)

Judge Jr., Here's How Again, 1929

Review

Intended to be the last drink of the night on Christmas Eve/Day, or indeed any night when you desire a cocktail to transport you to a comfy chair beside a warming fire.

I love the specificity of when to enjoy this!

Is there a way to search in the Cocktail Finder for a mood or setting (e.g. Christmas night, Backyard Summer Quencher, Let's Get This Party Started, etc)?

Yes, in Cocktail Finder, you can search for recipes by style (e.g., Long drinks or Highballs), Time of Day (e.g. aperitivo), and Occasion or Season (e.g. Spring or Halloween).

Very interesting combo - didn’t quite come together for me, but could be down to choice of ingredients? I used Perro e San Juan, Glamorganie, lustau PX, Oldesloer kümmel (only one Ive been able to get). No liquorice bitters so a small dash of fernet branca. I added a dash of cognac which seemed to make things more harmonious. Interested to hear others’ thoughts…

Still can't find any kĂĽmmel in Seattle.

Yah as usual with anything slightly unusual I had to buy online, and could only find one lonesome brand available here 🙄. And I suspect it’s not the best example of its kind, tho I haven’t tried others to compare - I like caraway flavour, but was broadly underwhelmed by this product. Good luck with your hunt for Fine and Rare Spirits!

Thanks for bringing this back to my attention. I have some really nice akvavit so might see if I can fettle something along the lines of this recipe.

I made the 1929 equal parts KĂĽmmel Ye Faithful drink. It's a simple straight swig of creamy cumin. It needs something additional for depth. A touch of orange? Gonna play with it again sometime.

Simon, what was the inspiration for this? I feel like you really have to be in tune with these ingredients to come up with this. It’s way more elegant and inviting than most of these ingredients show themselves to be. Well done, sir!

I've no idea! Sometimes I make a cocktail with a couple of ingredients and that can lead me to switch some of the other ingredients to make a new, completely different cocktail. Other times I start from scratch. Now nearly a year on, I can't remember what lead to the Kummel Ye Faithful.

It’s an intuitive skill, clearly. It would be great to hear more of how you put together new ideas, or the process of inspiration to final creation.
