Trying with a recently acquired (and rapidly disappearing) bottle of ford’s gin. Lovely dry, aromatic and complex. Eminently drinkable at first, then some of the bitter elements linger, adding depth. I love the excellent balance of sweet, dry, sour and bitter here. And the lemon twist works a dream.

Some more about this being the "favourite pre-luncheon tipple" of the UK's previous monarch can be found in this 2003 piece in the LRB https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v25/n22/thomas-jones/short-cuts. Note in particular that this source suggests equal parts were preferred, not 2:1 as specified in another comment.

I believe it’s hearsay either way. Thanks for the link, a nice little article!

All this praiseworthy efforts might be united in some sort of Elizabethan Cocktails section/article/book. Just my thought.

Quite a few Coronation cocktails also, not a bad idea!

Apparently QEII preferred hers with a ratio of 2 parts Dubonnet to 1 part gin.

I tried the 2:1 version. Not nearly as good. Maybe some tonic water or club soda would save it. I'm sticking with the Harry Craddock version!
