History

Adapted from a recipe in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book.

ATTA BOY COCKTAIL.
⅓ French Vermouth.
⅔ Dry Gin.
4 Dashes Grenadine.
Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.

Harry Craddock, The Savoy Cocktail Book, 1930

Review

The orange zest twist makes or breaks this classic, which when properly balanced lets the gin shine supported by herbal vermouth and delicate sweet pomegranate notes.

Sharp and not too sweet, very enjoyable

Man, did I think this was a pointless cocktail, clearly because of the grenadine measure. But if you make this with Jeffrey Morgenthaler's grenadine recipe (just made a fresh batch), not too shabby. (21 Dec 2023, 1:02a)

This is great. Allows all the herbal flavours of the gin to shine with the grenadine adding a little fruit sweetness. We made our own grenadine so it is not as sweet as many commercial brands.

Nice variation on a martini. The grenadine smooths out the cocktail. Gin forward - make sure you use a high quality gin.

I think probably my zest wasn't very zesty/oily. I did think the grenadine overpowered even with 2 zests, so added a slice, which helped a bit. I wonder about trying next time with less grenadine... would that work?
