Review:

Perhaps not a Bourbon Street staple, but characterful nonetheless with tequila, mezcal, aromatised wine, maraschino and orange bitters.

Lovely cocktail. Maybe a distant Azzuri offspring of those simple, pure and wonderful 'old timey' Old Fashioneds. For us, the 7.5ml volume of Mezcal as a rinse is a bit indulgent...2.5ml worked just fine.

Since the cocktail's name references 'The Big Easy' (for no apparent reason), we might try a rinse of Absinthe instead of the Mezcal next time around.

Do rember the coffee beans, important for the taste and smooth integration of the other ingredients.
Next time, I will try halving or skipping the 5 ml sugar syrup, and use a little less orange bitters.

For anyone wanting to try a dry (less sweet) agave forward variation while keeping the idea intact:
45 ml Olmeca Altos Reposado Tequila
15 ml Del Maguey Vida Clásico Mezcal
20 ml Dolin Dry Vermouth
10 ml Maraska Maraschino Liqueur
2 dash Angostura Orange Bitters
1–2 drops saline (optional)

Stir with ice until properly chilled and diluted
Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora

Garnish
Express lemon zest and orange zest over the surface
Discard lemon peel, keep orange twist (optional)
Light grating of dark chocolate over the top

Good variation on the New York Minute, a lightly smoky version. I threw all the mezcal in (7.5 ml to rinse a glass?) and it didn't overpower the drink, but I also like smokiness in general.

Wonderful evening sipper. Absolutely keep all the mezcal in!

This is a really good cocktail. It's kind of a shame you discard the unused mezcal because it really does wonders in this cocktail, and I wish there was more of it. I'd say - use 0.7cl mezcal as an ingredient and keep everything else. It's a wonderful cocktail where the Maraschino is surprisingly subdued. The agave notes from the Tequila is certainly building the backbone, but all the other ingredients circle around it and make themselves noticed.

I did, and 7.5 ml mezcal in the cocktail as an ingredient does not dominate after letting the drink sit a minute.

Excellent - delicious notes from the maraschino (not overwhelming, I'm surprised you can use this much maraschino and not have it obnoxiously dominant), works very well with the vermouth. And the tequila is great in the background, with just a hint of smoke from the mezcal - really excellent!

Lovely drink. Jay is right. Don't skip the coffee beans!
Delish!

I agree that there is a nice balance of sweet and salty notes. After rinsing the glass and then actually discarding the rest of the mezcal, I actually found it to be quite subtle and not too smoky.

The three coffee beans really make a difference; I almost ignored them...don't!

I forgot and then went to read all comments. And added the coffee beans, and let it sit for a minute. Big difference indeed, I like the cocktail!
