Serve in a Coupe glass

Ingredients:
34 oz Straight rye whiskey (100 proof /50% alc./vol.)
34 oz Tennessee whiskey
1 oz Giffard Pamplemousse liqueur
1 oz Bittersweet orange-red aperitivo
× 1 1 serving

How to make:

  1. Select and pre-chill a Coupe glass.
  2. Prepare garnish of grapefruit zest twist.
  3. SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
  4. FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.
  5. EXPRESS grapefruit zest twist over cocktail and use as garnish.

Review:

Eric Tecosky's original recipe for this cocktail calls for 1.25oz of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel instead of the combination of Tennessee and rye whiskies used here. Being a mix of split base spirits and liqueurs, it was stirred, as you'd expect such a combination. However, somewhat reminiscent of Shakerato, the Sunset Strip seems to benefit from the aeration and extra dilution provided by shaking. Hence, this is the method I've chosen.

I made a bunch of these 2 or so years ago for my wife and her friends and they loved it. I stuck with Bourbon at 1.25 and didnt split the base. I tried the specs here and it was just as good.
However something was off this time and my guess is my bottle of Pamplemousse Liquor (Giffards) is past its prime as the bottle is over 2 years old easily, and more.

My question is how long does Pamplemousee liquor last?

This was considerably sweeter than I was expecting (or really like). Adding .5oz fresh lemon juice--essentially turning it into a Paper Plane with Pamplemousse--made it quite lovely, though, for me. (The beauty of cocktails, right? One can adapt it to one's own palate, always...)

Great as an aperitif. I found it a little sweeter than I was expecting. Would have put the sweetness as a 6. Did add a dash of grapefruit bitters and that did balance the sweetness.

Terrific. I made it with Epoch high-rye bourbon from Baltimore Spirits Company, Peychaud’s Bitter Liqueur, and Giffard’s Pampelmousse. Quite satisfactory.

Prefer to do equal parts rye and bourbon. Nonetheless a refreshing weekend afternoon sipper!
