A liberal dash of amaretto adds very Italian subtexts of apricot and almond to a classic Margarita.

Found it a bit tart - could have taken a little more amaretto. Might just have been my limes though. Should have tasted shouldn’t I. Ffs

I added some lime, as the orange was too dominant to my taste. Next time I would try with tequila blanco, or mix reposado with some mezcal as suggested.

Made again, but took the other comments to mix the reposado and some mezcal. Added a little Margarita Bitters. Everything took the cocktail to another level,

The Amaretto adds that thing. The aroma before you drink and its on the very tail of the taste. Sippable, This drink lasts a long time. I love it.

Did it over an ice ball because I love my margaritas on the rocks. Was delightful! Will have to try with a mezcal base for some smokiness!

It occurs to me that another way of looking at this is not as an Italian Margarita but as a Mexican Mai Tai.

Would this margarita suffer from having a salt rim on the glass?

Not if you like salt. I prefer my margaritas with a couple of drops of saline solution in the cocktail but without a salt rim.
