The variation, the non-combusted merely "Edison" or "The Edisonian", which calls for all the ingredients (inc. brandy) to be stirred together with ice, is a bitter drink but lacks the theatre. Opt for showmanship or discernment – your call. Whichever, this bittersweet cocktail is suited to the aperitivo moment.
