Made this with Wild Turkey 101 Rye & Del Maguey Vida Clasico. Fairly smokey, but that's always fine by me. There's a sweetness up front, with the rye, amaro, & bitters filling out the middle, ending with the smokey, earthy mezcal. The orange zest adds some additional complexity on the nose. Very nice drink.
Never really thought that mezcal would play well with rye, boy was I wrong. Will be added to the regular rotation.
Used a really nice Yuu Baal joven mezcal and a smooth Redwood Empire Rye.
Made mine with a 99 proof bourbon and a moderately smokey joven mezcal. Simply supurb! Generous orange zest playfully plays amidst Averna's and Angostura's amaro notes, whilst the whiskey slash mezcal base provide a solid stage for all this frollicking. Do try. Five stars.
Quite good! This will be sensitive to the specific mezcal used. I used Mal Bien 100% Espadin and it worked well. This is an artesanal but fairly tame mezcal. For everyday use I usually use Bulleit "95" rye but for this I used A.Overholt "Monongahela Mash" straight rye (95 proof, 80% rye, 20% barley malt, non-chill-filtered).
After trying with both mezcal and a peated single malt scotch, presuming the latter would be an improvement, I can confirm that I was wrong. I did find the rye got a bit overpowered but the earthy notes from the mezcal really worked. I'm thinking maybe upping the rye would prefect it for me.
Not being a big fan of mezcal, we approached this cocktail with reservations. Found it very flavourful and wonderful before dinner. You can taste the smoky of the mezcal, but is not the overpowering flavour of the cocktail which is the rye.
