History:

Originally made with a high proof bourbon, I prefer this cocktail with the spicy notes a bottled-in-bond rye whiskey delivers.

back for a re-make, 10Ml Grenadine this time, 18ML lime, floated with 62% ABV bourbon or rye... really good flavor opens up to sweeter complexity below !

Knob creek 9 does awesome on this one. need bold spirit to hold its own against all the other ingredients.

Ran out of rye so I replaced it with Abasolo.
Felt more tiki vibes with this version.

Excellent and unusual tiki cocktail. I used 2/3 Jim Beam and 1/3 Balcones rye. I will play with different ratios this holidays in search of my favourite one.

this is so great, it's interesting how whiskey is not my favorite spirit by far, but it complements so well with flavors I like, which makes it a great cocktail spirit for me

I tried substituting Falernum for the syrup, and it turned out very well. Would recommend.

Had no Rye, so went with Wild Turkey 101. Was nice and delicious, although I can see how the Rye would make it more challenging and complex. The sweet grainy whiskey pairs so well with the wonderful and rich fruitiness. I'd say that this would be a 4.5 to 5* drink for those not particularly into cocktails!

Retrying this with rye, this comment was definitely when my palate was wetter than now. Making it now with rye, it is pretty balanced (although on the sweet side), and this recipe would be too sweet with Bourbon. All in all, the rye version of Difford's Guide is the best Halekulani.

Changes I would make: 20 ml lemon juice, 10 ml pineapple juice, 7.5 ml grenadine, 2.5 ml demerara syrup... I did use 94 proof Elijah Craig rye, which is rich, and I do think that factored into the execution of flavor... I went through one iteration before this, taking the suggestions of Lorenz (5 ml demerara), and that was better than the posted recipe (which is too sweet), but wasn't quite there. (7 Nov)

Love this variation. It is definitely a tropical cocktail but remains a unique one, and the rye surprised me in this drink. Tart, sweet, bitter, and rich. One of my top five right now. Wouldn't change a thing.
