Review:

A Godfather based on peated scotch whisky in place of blended scotch and with a splash of sherry to accompany the amaretto in the classic recipe.

History:

Created in April 2023 by yours truly using Caisteal Chamuis peated whisky which is named after Caisteal Chamuis (AKA Castle Camus) which was built on the east coast of Sleat, Isle of Skye by the MacLeod clan. A riff on the Godfather, this cocktail is named for these industrious builders and the MacDonald clan for which this castle became a stronghold.

Alcohol content:

  • 1.6 standard drinks
  • 28.62% alc./vol. (28.62° proof)

I will give this a try but using my favourite peaty whisky Laphroaig and I only think of clansmen as wearing Kilts!

Will try, but wanted to point out, probably not the best name for a cocktail in the US.

I completely agree with all of you and I understand why it’s named the way it is, just had to take a beat to get there. Anyway, got around to actually trying it with a super peaty Ardbeg that I had on hand and it’s really tasty.

I’m not sure it matters. The people who mistakenly link the name with the KKK would be wrong.
The Scottish clans predate the band of slack-jawed, racist, inbred rednecks by more than a thousand years. I think that gives them ownership of the term ‘clansman’. On top of which, if someone does make an incorrect assumption and asks their barkeeper about the origin of the name, it makes a good talking point.
