History

Recipe adapted from Albert Stevens Crockett's 1935 The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book.

TURF
Dash of Angostura Bitters
One-third Italian Vermouth
Two-thirds Hollands Gin (Stir)
At times a good half–possibly two-thirds–of the crowd in the Bar were interested in racing.

A. S. Crockett, 1935

Review

Albert Stevens Crockett's original recipe calls for two-thirds genever to one-third sweet vermouth, but this produces an overly dry cocktail so I've upped the proportion of vermouth to genever. Made with a quality oude genever, this cocktail is almost nutty and makes for an interesting aperitif.

Made it in original proportions (60ml Zuidam oude genever 3 yr, 30 ml Dolin rouge, 1 dash bitter truth bogart's) and thought it wasn't too dry at all, delicious!

This drink is splendid I made it with Bols Genever and also with Jorgen new style floral genever - it rocks regardless - I made it 2 oz Genever; 1.5 oz Barolo Chinato and 2 healthy dashes of Boker Bitters. Lemon slice and oils as well. Fabulous.

I was in Pittsburgh last month and went to the Wigle distillery. Excellent wide-ranging array of brands; was a bit stunned. Bought a bottle of their 'Dutch-Style Gin'. This has been so far the best cocktail I've made with it. Used a recent (today) purchase of Poli Gran Bassano. What a delightful combo!

Just made this again with St. George Dry Rye, Cocchi di Torino, and actual Bitter Truth Bogart's Bitters (I only got my current bottle within the last 12 months)... It's not going to replace my favorite recipe for a Martinez, but there ARE some similarities... I remember that bottle of the Wigle. Too tasty.
